Protesters were attacked at Central American University in Managua, Nicaragua, on April 18 as clashes between protesters against social security reforms and supporters of the government were reported throughout the city.
Riot police were mobilized to respond to the clashes and traffic was diverted from roads where protesters were marching.
The protesters demonstrated against reforms to the pension system that see worker contributions increase, while reducing the payout of future pensions, a measure the president of the Nicaraguan Institute of Social Security said was necessary to sustain the institution for a 10 years, at which point further reforms would be necessary.
