Turkish-led forces take Syrian city of Afrin from Kurdish YPG

Turkish-backed forces have taken over the Syrian city of Afrin after Kurdish forces were forced to leave the area.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his Special Forces and the Free Syrian Army seized control of the city center on Sunday morning, local time.
Turkish fighters could be seen waving flags and taking down a statue of a legendary Kurdish figure.
It is the result of a two-month operation to clear the border region of the Kurdish YPG militia, despite calls from Europe and the U.S. urging Ankara to stop the offensive.
Turkey sees the YPG as terrorists, but the U.S. has trained and even armed some Kurdish troops to fight against the Islamic State group.
