Video from Florida, Gauteng, South Africa, shows the aftermath of what local resident Siyabulela Precious Ruiters calls “irresponsible” parenting.
Parked outside a local Spar convenience store, Ruiters filmed a security guard holding a toddler, while another small child plays in an open window in a nearby car.
Ruiters explains in a commentary accompanying the video that the back window of the car was left “wide open,” with the children “alone” inside. One of the children, who she says is a girl who is “almost two,” began to cry leading to the security guard’s intervention.
Ruiters said that after filming the video she “waited in my car for like 15 min” and there was still no sign of any adult coming back to claim the children as theirs. “Parent – no show,” she added.
A man who commented on the video claiming to be the security guard involved, Piroger Mabeka, wrote, “It is never alright to leave a child in a car for any amount of time. Anything could happen, the child could become ill or the car could be hijacked with the child inside. There is no reason for a parent to leave their child locked up in a car these days because malls have trolleys and carts that you can carry your children around in while you shop. There is just no excuse.”
He added in a further comment, “dear parent dont do this , bcoz [sic] if s.thing bad happen u gonna blame the carguard for nothing but i just tried my part as a car guard and much appreciated the person who took the video.”
