Early in the morning, from a perch in a tree house blind at Shenton Safaria Kaingo Camp in South Luangwa National Park next to the Luangwa River in Zambia, one can witness elephant families crossing the river following the same route they have taken for decades. On this day in August, new, when one elephant family reached the other side they were met by crocodiles on the bank and below the surface, as can be partially seen by the splashes and ivity in the river at the bank. The matriarch elephants retreated, formed a circle around the baby, prepared for attack, then slowly worked their way to shore to safety, then shrieked for relief once all were safe.
