5 Speed Racing Kart Build (Pt. 2)

2018-02-27 1

We're building a 5 speed manual transmission go kart with a 200cc 16 horsepower engine starting with a racing go kart chassis. We make a motor mount for the engine and transmission combo, scuff, touch up, and clear coat the frame, and install a brand new racing steering wheel.

We started with a Phantom Racing Chassis Gauntlet made in the late 1990s. The Gauntlet racing go kart chassis was the most unpopular Phantom ever made for unspecified reasons. Ike bought it for me in 2013 for $200. The go kart had been sitting in the weeds for years rusting away with a modified (and stuck) Briggs and Stratton 5HP engine. When I got it, I immediately put a Harbor Freight 212cc engine on it, removed the governor, and made minor performance upgrades. The kart was then featured in one of our most viewed videos, "9 Reasons to Buy an Old Go Kart". The kart got driven hard, and was wrecked almost two years ago. Not having the proper parts to fix it, it sat, and we robbed parts like the engine off of it. This build is resurrecting that racing kart, which is my personal favorite.
