Strong winds in Gangneung forced the closure of its Olympic Park on February 14. Reports said tents, crowd control barriers and signs were knocked over in the strong gusts, with sustained wind speeds measured at around 40 km/h (23 mph).

Ski events at the main Olympic venue, in Pyeongchang, had to be postponed because of the high winds.

Some injuries were reported due to flying debris.

TV footage showed toppled concession stands and drinks machines as a result of the severe winds at the Gangneung park.

The New York Times noted that an official weather report ahead of the games had warned that “the most dominant weather pattern” during the period of the games was a “Siberian High,” which would bring “high winds and low windchill temperatures.” Credit: k_yoons via Storyful
