A bear was spotted foraging for food on a highway in Missoula, Montana on Tuesday, February 6, months ahead of when most bears wake from their winter hibernation.

A local wildlife expert speculated the animal was forced to leaves its den because of flooding and was searching for roadkill, NBC Montana reported.

This video was captured by eyewitness Rebekah Cockrell. It shows the bear looking for food in the snow next to Interstate 90 at Gold Creek.

The bear will likely build a new den if its current one had been destroyed, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks bear management specialist James Jonkel, quoted in the NBC report. Bears typically hibernate for up to five months from late November. Credit: Clover Social Media via Storyful
