The UK Prime Minister Theresa May was applauded by the Chinese state media for sidestepping the topic of human rights during her three day trip to the country. The Chinese state-run newspaper Global Times praised May’s attempt to seek “pragmatic collaboration” with China. The editorial noted that she had ignored calls for her to address China’s human rights record. Activists have criticized China for imprisoning and abducting political dissidents, as well as censoring hostile opinions.
