The Torgya Festival is an annual three day festival of the Monpa tribe of Buddhists, held popularly in Tawang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh. Though not on the itinerary of many mainstream tourists, the Torgya festival is a three day extravaganza of beautifully coloured costumes, dances and festivities. The monastic dances are symbolic in nature and are done to drive out evil spirits. Each dance in itself lasts for hours and the dancers wear colourful costumes and masks of deities and animals. When seen in slow motion, the dances get a richer hue and showcase a very different emotion.
