Coast Guard contractors removed an oil tank from under a dilapidated pier on the Columbia River near Astoria, on January 30, according to the US authorities.
The 10,000 gallon oil tank was the source of an oil spill reported on January 18. The tank had been under the pier since the mid-1900s, when it was used as a fuel source for a boiler at a seafood cannery.
Before containment, an oil sheen was reported as far downriver as Hammond, about five miles downstream from the spill, according to The Columbia Basin Bulletin. Credit: PO1 Levi Read via Storyful
