Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was arrested on January 28 as he walked to the demonstration area of a Moscow anti-corruption protest. The Moscow protest was one of multiple nationwide protests that Navalny supporters took part in.

Navalny had called for the demonstrations to take place after he was disqualified from standing in the 2018 Russian presidential election due to a criminal record stemming from 2013 embezzlement charges. Navalny and his supporters claim the charges were politically motivated.

On the same day as the nationwide protests, police officers raided Navalny’s offices in Moscow, claiming that they were investigating a bomb threat, according to a spokeswoman for Navalny. Credit: Team Navalny Moscow via Storyful
