ABOUT SPINACH -- Spinach (known and Palak in Hindi) is an edible flowering plant (vegetable). It belongs to Amaranthaceae family (beets and Swiss chard) of plants and is native to central and southwestern Asia. Among the Worlds Healthiest vegetables, Spinach comes out at the top of ranking list for nutrient richness. Rich in rich in iron, vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in healthy phytonutrients such as carotenoids and flavonoids which provided powerful antioxidant protection. \r
\r
There are three basic type of Spinach which are listed below\r
\r
1) Savoy Spinach is very productive and handles cold better than most types of Spinach has dark green, crinkly and curly leaves.\r
2) Smooth-Leafed Spinach has smooth, flat leaves that are easier to clean, which makes it the primary choice for processed Spinach.\r
3) Semi-savoy is a hybrid variety with slightly crinkled leaves. It has the same texture as Savoy, but it is not as difficult to clean. \r

GROWING SPINACH -- I had been growing Spinach from quiet some time and we decided to make a video which starts with sowing till harvest. I was thinking whether to do okra, coriander or any other vegetable plant. Spinach has never disappointed me till now. Indian summer hybrid (Palak seeds) is super fast growing. It hardly takes 2 months from sow to harvest.\r
\r
To grow Spinach (Palak) you just need a shallow pot with a mixture of garden soil, generic compost make sure that the pot has good drainage and that you water twice a day. Another thing which you can also put is ground nut cakes (generally used as fodder for horse and cow). If you can get ground nut cakes then soak it in water for one full day and mix it in the soil (either from the above or while preparing the pot) this ground nut cakes will do wonders to your Spinach plant. The variety of Spinach (Palak) used in this Video is Indian Summer Hybrid this varity can tolerate heat and grows well in tropical climate.\r

Other important thing to be aware of ,is pest control. Some of the thing that i do control pests are; Dont keep dried/ wet leaves in the pot as it may attr several pests, remove weeds to avoid grass hoppers and several pests too. When I tried growing Spinach (Palak) for first time, seedling grown well but after some time pigeons attacked my Spinach plants and tried to eat it :(, put a net above the plants to avoid Pigenos, Also keep as much as in sunlight, sprinkle water on leaves daily to recognise if there is grass hopper. I remove grass hopper manually as I dont prefer pesticide to my plants.Keep the surrounding of the pot clean. If at all you need to use a pesticide use neem oil instead of any other chemical pesticide. To avoid leaf miner just remove infected leaf/ plant from your garden. Also by planting Spinach along with other plants like Onion springs you can avoid some pests as smell of onion deter some insects.\r
\r
If you follow the above tips, i am sure you will get healthy and wonderfully leafy Spinach.Who doesnt like Palak Paneer :)\r
\r
Thats it about Spinach for now, I have also grown Papaya, Coriander, Mint (Pudina), Ladies Finger (okra), Bitter gourd/melon, Musk Melon, Cucumber, Tomatoes, Spinach (Palak), Egg Plant(Brinjal), Amaranthus, Spring onions, Ash Gourd (Winter Melon), Hyacinth (Lablab), Sugar Apples and different type of flowers in our Terrace Garden. \r
