Spanish and Portuguese police seized 1,642 pounds of cocaine that was smuggled into Lisbon, Portugal, concealed inside a shipment of pineapples.
Spain’s Interior Ministry said in a statement nine suspects had been arrested in the operation announced on Wednesday, January 17.
The gang allegedly concealed cocaine inside wax containers inserted into hollowed fresh pineapples shipped from South America to Portugal. The drugs were then transferred to properties in Madrid and Barcelona for processing in cars with concealed compartments. Police also recovered $487,000 (400,000 euro) in cash during the operation.
