A truck carrying thousands of live chickens crashed over the side of an overpass in North Geelong, Victoria, on January 15.
The truck rolled off the side of the Princes Highway overpass shortly after 10am and landed on an embankment below, according to local media.
The driver of the truck injured his arm in the collision and was taken to Geelong Hospital.
Animal rights activist and member of the Animal Justice Party, Andy Meddick, shared a video of chickens sprawled along the side of the road next to opened crates.
“Despite having many activists at our disposal to help administer veterinary care, we were not permitted to help. Instead, these birds were allowed to die slowly and painfully on the roadside, where they will be written off as wastage by someone in a boardroom,” he wrote.
Local sergeant Brendan Whitefield said the local council’s management teams were called to euthanase injured birds and recover survivors.
