Italian military police and German police arrested 169 people, including two mayors in Crotone, southwest Italy, in an anti-mafia operation, Italian wire service ANSA reported January 9.

Around 50 million euros of assets were also seized in raids across northern Italy and southwest Germany, according to the Carabinieri, or Italian military police. Authorities targeted the ’Ndrangheta, one of the most powerful organised crime groups in the southwestern Italian region of Calabria. The gang was planning to expand into Switzerland, the BBC reported. Credit: Carabinieri via Storyful
