The 101 Freeway was shut down between Ventura and Santa Barbara counties in California on Tuesday, January 9, because of mudflows across the highway.

The 101 was shut down in both directions for more than 30 miles near where the Thomas wildfire burned last year, the Los Angeles Times reported. Heavy rain in the early hours of Tuesday morning triggered flooding and mudflows in areas burned by wildfires last year.

At least five people were killed, including in Montecito where mudflows trapped people in vehicles and their homes. The National Weather Service said 0.54 inches of rain fell in Montecito over five minutes during the storm.
