Whiteouts from a major nor’easter on December 4 caused hundreds of flights in and out of JFK Airport to be cancelled, shut down the airport in mid-afternoon, and diverted one giant airliner to a small upstate New York airport.
This video shows conditions aboard flight SQ26, bound for JFK but diverted to Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, Orange County, New York. Singapore Airlines operates A-380s on that route, the largest airliner in service worldwide.
Fortunately, Stewart Airport, about 60 miles north of New York City, was built with a special emergency runway for the supersonic Concorde airliner when it was in service, which can accommodate large aircraft.
As many as 4,000 flights were canceled because of the storm. Credit: Twitter/Manoelgerlach via Storyful
