United States Coast Guard cutter Penobscot Bay, a 140-foot icebreaking tugboat, helped crack the ice along the Hudson River near Albany, New York, on Tuesday, January 2.

In addition to cutting the ice, the Penobscot Bay was used to rescue two commercial tugboats beset in ice – one on Sunday night, another on Tuesday morning.

The Albany Times Union reported the city has been blasted with frigid temperatures since before the start of the new year. The average temperature in Albany was 24.8 degrees Fahrenheit in December, which was nearly 4 degrees colder than normal. Credit: USCGC PENOBSCOT BAY (WTGB 107) via Storyful
