Multiple people were reported dead and more injured on December 28 after a fire ripped through a Prospect Avenue apartment building in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City, New York. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio reported 12 had died in the fire.
“This is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city – it will rank as one of the worst losses in a fire in many years,” de Blasio said.
According to the New York Post, the fire started just after 7 pm and quickly grew to a four-alarm blaze with more than 170 firefighters responding. At least 15 people were initially reported injured and witnesses saw people trying to run into the building to rescue inhabitants.
