Victoria Police told reporters on December 21 that they were treating an incident in which a car was driven into pedestrians near Flinders Street station in Melbourne as a “deliberate act”. They said the motivations were still unknown.
The police said that 14 people were injured and a number of those were in critical condition.
The incident happened just after 4:30 pm at the intersection of Flinders Street and Elizabeth Street. According to a local news source, the driver and a second man were arrested.
One witness told The Australian that there was “no screaming, just people lying there and people attending them”. Among the injured are a pre-school-aged boy in serious condition.
