Thousands March Through Buenos Aires to Protest Pension Reform

Thousands across Buenos Aires marched in protest against Argentina’s newly approved pension reform on the night of Tuesday, December 19.

Lawmakers passed the bill earlier in the day with a 128 to 116 vote, which will make effective a delay in the retirement age for Argentinians and a cut in welfare payments. The government said the move was necessary to lower the country’s deficit, according to the BBC.

The demonstration was a continuation of Monday night’s protests, which turned violent as civilians threw stones and explosives at police, who fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons in response.
