Erosion devouring Albanian coastlines at alarming pace

Along the northern coast of the Albanian Adriatic, near the concrete buildings of the beach resort of Shengjin, dozens of tree trunks are decaying in water. It's a reminder that there used to be a forest between the sea and Kune lagoon. Here the sea has begun to swallow the coastline, but this is also happening elsewhere. Out of Albania's 427 kilometres of coastline, 154 are affected by erosion, something that locals attribute to climate change and untamed urbanisation.
