On Wednesday, the FDA said it is looking at new ways to help wean smokers off of cigarettes. The agency published a blog claiming it was assessing the efficacy of current over-the-counter products that smokers can use as nicotine-replacement therapies. Current options for smokers are: • Over-the-counter gum
• Nicotine patches
• Lozenges
• Nasal sprays or inhalers The committee in charge of the new effort is considering a current, trendy nicotine-replacement product: E-cigarettes. The electronic devices simulate smoking and could be a candidate for an over-the-counter smoking-cessation option.
