Jubilation broke out in Harare when Zimbabwe’s President, Robert Mugabe, issued a resignation letter on Tuesday evening, November 21, cutting short an impeachment hearing set to commence the following morning.
Lawmakers responded with cheers as parliament speaker Jacob Mudende read out the letter that abruptly ended Mugabe’s 37 years in power.
Mugabe refused to step down for several days after Zimbabwe’s military seized control of the country last week. The takeover was triggered by the dismissal of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa two weeks ago, which many feared was a precursor to Mugabe’s wife, Grace, stepping into the role.
