In videos posted to a Twitter account run by their mother, an English teacher, two girls in East Damascus, Syria, under the siege of combat for weeks, say they want to learn and play like other children.
Alaa, 8, and Noor, 10, live in the besieged area of East Damascus, where food prices and rates of malnutrition, especially among children, has risen in recent months.
Multiple deadly airstrikes have hit East Damascus in the last three weeks, and aircraft are audible flying overhead in several of these videos.
In one video, the two girls say good night wearing hats and scarves. In another video, they climb the stairs of a building that has sustained significant damage, and talk about their neighbor who they say was killed in an airstrike.
On November 14, footage shows the girls standing outside as aircraft are audible overhead. “I hate the flying,” Alaa says, as her sister puts her hands over her ears and crouches over.
