Rights Groups Claim Myanmar's Investigation Of Atrocities A "Whitewash"

On Tuesday, human rights groups criticized a Myanmar military investigation into alleged atrocities inflicted on Rohingya Muslims, calling the investigation a "whitewash" and calling for both UN and independent investigators to be allowed into the country. Since August, over half a million Rohingya have fled into Bangladesh, driven out of the country by a counter-insurgency operation in Rakhine State that was called a classic case of "ethnic cleansing" by a top UN official. Pramila Patten, the U.N. special representative of the secretary-general on sexual violence in conflict, stated that she would bring accusations against the Myanmar military with the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
