Google has partnered with environmental technology firm Aclima to map out areas of high air pollution in California using its Earth platform.

The companies measured air quality to gather hyperlocal data from problematic hot spots in the San Fransisco Bay area, Los Angeles and Central Valley by covering over 100,000 miles during 4,000 hours of driving using Google Street View cars.

In a blog post, Aclima said the measurements along them to see how “traffic-choked freeways, traffic on local streets, and weather patterns that blow pollution inland all influence the patterns of air pollution.” The company hopes the research will contribute to future urban planning and create more sustainable cities by reducing greenhouse gases and improving air quality.
