Overwatch (Open Beta) - i5 4690K & GTX 770 - FPS Test and Settings

2017-11-07 2

Greetings, everyone.\r
\r
Today were back with another frame rate testing video, and this time we have the Overwatch open beta upon us, which runs from the 5th to the 9th of May, or from the 3rd if you preordered or a friend was kind enough to give you a key, like it happened to me.\r
\r
Firstly though, my current PC specs are the following:\r
\r
-CPU: i5 4690K@4.4 GHz (Turbo) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO.\r
-Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger.\r
-GPU: Asus GTX 770 DirectCU II OC 2 GB with no extra OC and latest WHQL driver (365.10).\r
-RAM: 16 GB DDR3@1866, 9-10-9-28.\r
-Storage: Kingston SSDNow 300, 240 GB where both game and O.S. are installed.\r
-O.S: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit with latest updates.\r
-Game running at 1080p/144 Hz.\r
\r
As we can see in the video, the game comes with quite a lot of things in the graphic settings department. Its nice they opted to add a FOV slider, which goes from 80 to 103, and thatll be sufficient for 16:9 and certainly for 16:10 aspect ratios. For 21:9 I wasnt able to test, I dont know if the game supports that aspect ratio, but if thats the case the FOV would need to be adjusted as well, so lets hope thats the case.\r
\r
Five main presets available, from Low to Epic; with the Epic setting, my PC manages slightly above 60 FPS in the training scenario, so not very promising for intense multiplayer games perhaps, and some tweaking needs to be done there.\r
\r
As usual, I test all the available presets and we can see it is possible to achieve 144 FPS at Medium settings, and the game doesnt look too bad considering well be blasting away enemy players in this heavily stylized world of Overwatch, certainly doesnt look bad for what it is…and runs very smoothly.\r
\r
The game also has a frame rate limiter, for 30, unlimited or “display limited”, this last one meaning that itll be our monitors refresh rate the limiting for, but lets not mistake it for what VSYNC does. With this limiter in place, we can have VSYNC off and the game will look for the most stable frame rate that feels right according to our refresh rate; in my case, running at 144 Hz refresh, the game usually decides to limit itself at 70 FPS, so thats almost half my 144 Hz, so I can enjoy a stable experience at a frame rate that works good enough , and feels right, for 144 Hz, and that would be half of it, if the 144 FPS mark cant be achieved.\r
\r
So, anyway, you can still set the limiter off and use MSI Afterburner / Rivatuner Statistics Server to cap the frame rate to lets say…100, and things like that. Just do what you normally do in other games and itll feel alright, I suppose, the choices are there.\r
\r
In any case, we can see the graphical setting that affects the performance the most is Dynamic Reflections, and using the High preset with High Textures yielded me decent enough performance even during a players vs bots match, which is not bad at all. Ive also been playing for a few hours online vs other players and the performance remains consistent to my tests, so I can safely say that Blizzard did a very good job with the PC version here.\r
\r
As usual, I hope you guys liked this video, and Ill see you in the next one : )
