Old Jesse has become one of the most well-known shanghainese restaurants in Shanghai. Since opening in 1990, this traditional style restaurant has become a local favorite where rubbing shoulders with celebrities like Tony Leung, Ang Lee, Faye Wang, etc. is a frequent occurrence. It has a relaxing homestyle vibe and the portions are sizeable and meant to be shared - best to go in groups. We like the salted chicken, braised pork with egg, crab fat with sheet jelly, and braised noodles with scallion oil. There are now four locations, but the Tianping Road restaurant is the original gangster. The staff isn't the warmest, but they'll point you in the right direction if recommendations are necessary - make sure to make a reservation.
