The Cass Scenic Railroad, in Cass West Virginia operates 5 geared steam locomotives, and has 2 down for rebuilds. Shays 4, 5, 6, and 11 are operational, and Heisler 6 is also operational. The Railroad is rebuilding another shay steam locomotive, Pacific Coast Shay #2, and a 70 ton Climax Steam Locomotive, Climax #9. These geared engines are designed to negotiate sharp turns, steep grades, and poor track conditions often found on hastily made logging railroads.
