The roof of a school gym was torn away by high winds caused by ex-Hurricane Ophelia when it hit the southwest of Ireland on October 16.

One woman was killed in Waterford after a tree fell on the vehicle she was travelling in.

Met Éireann, the Irish weather service, warned that Ophelia was likely to be the most severe weather event to hit the country in over 50 years.

RTE News reported that more than 100,000 homes were without electricity, while transport services across the country were stopped. Dublin Airport had to cancel 135 flights.
