Despite the controversies surrounding Donald Trump, a Democratic strategist has stated that the president “has a clear path to winning reelection.”
As Doug Sosnik, who used to advise former President Bill Clinton, elaborated in a recent Washington Post op-ed, “If Trump isn’t removed from office and doesn’t lead the country into some form of global catastrophe, he could secure a second term simply by maintaining his current level of support with his political base.”
He goes on to point out that Trump, who has maintained his base of supporters, could take advantage of the fact that he doesn’t necessarily need to win the popular vote and that the weakened two-party system could lead to more fractured voting.
Vox’s Matthew Yglesias has since criticized the column by writing that “large parts of the argument consist of sweeping assertions unbacked by evidence, like the idea that 2020 will see ‘other minor party candidates joining the presidential race.’”
However, he ultimately agreed with Sosnik’s assertions that Trump’s favorability rating is likely higher than polls suggest and that a fracturing of the Democratic party vote could ultimately help Trump’s chances for victory “even with a narrow base of support.”
