6 - Pitch lake\r
This lake is comprised of pitch asphalt, which is that same stuff we use to surface roads. This strange lake has spots which are so thick you can easily wander across the black waters, whereas other sections are so thin, you can slip through the surface, vanishing forever into the murky depths below. The textures range from thick as solid rock, springy as an eraser and entangling as quicksand. Dead trees and ancient animal stone statues line the edges of this disturbing body of water. Located in the southwestern area of the island Trinidad, this bizarre lake has an area of around 40 feet and a depth of about 260 feet. This lake is well known as the worlds largest reservoir of natural asphalt. \r

5 - Chao Lake\r
This unusual lake can be found in China is the largest of the five freshwater lakes in the Chinese region. According to legends, this lake was cursed long ago by the heavens, due to the sins of the people, a white dragon was sent down to Earth and ordered to flood the sinful waters. Despite a humungous Earthquake in 1976, the lake survived, and approximately five million people once utilised its watery properties for irrigation, transportation and fishing. However, this lake has become highly polluted over the years, several berias have become entangled in the water-based ecosystem, especially some rather infective algae. One particular species of blue-green algae thrives on the lakes pollution and releases more toxins as it dies, causing the lake to appear highly discolored and alien in appearance. Could this legend have some basis in reality? \r

4 - The Dead Sea\r
This salt lake can be located between Isreal and Jordan. This surreal body of water is 420 meters below sea level, making its shores the lowest point on the surface of the Earth on dry land. This sea of the Dea is around 330 meters deep, which makes this mysterious natural wonder the deepest hypersaline lake on the entire planet. The Dead Sea is also one of the worlds saltiest bodies of water, with 30 percent salinity. This lake is over eight times saltier than ocean waters. Animals have toruble surviving here and ships have malfunctions when attempting to sail here. \r

3 - Lake Nyos\r
Find this strange lake in Cameroon. What makes this lake strange? Lake Nyos is one of the worlds only known exploding lakes. Beneath those misleading lake waters lives a pocket of magma, when carbon dioxide mixes, the water effectively transforms into carbonic acid. As recently as 1986, the lake burped up a massive plume of carbon dioxide. The explosion of gas caused many nearby to suffer from suffocation, this includes people and animals alike. This became known as the first ever large scale recorded mass asphyxiation from a natural occurrence. Many now steer clear of this volatile lake, as many believe another disaster of this kind is eminent as a natural dike which contains the lake is beginning to weaken and crack.\r

2 - Lost Lake\r
This mysterious lake can be found in Oregon, rumour has it that every summer the 9-foot deep, 85-acre lake quietly vanishes and every fall reappears again as if by magic. Scientists and researchers have been scratching their heads for years, but believe they have finally discovered the culprit. Lava Rocks. Yup two lava rocks left over from ancient lava flows, have apparently made Lost Lake their underwater home. These two lava rocks, continuously drain the water from the lakes surface, this prevents the lake from flooding during winter months. However, in the summertime, the streams which feed Lake Lost dry up, as a result, the lava tube rocks drain the lake dry. Once autumn arrives, the rain begins to fall again, causing the two tubes not be able to keep up with the rising water levels, and the lake reappears. \r

1 - Lake Natron \r
This next disturbing body of water can be located in East Africa. This lake is something from a Grimm fairy tale, or some demented nightmares. Have you ever heard of a lake which anything it touches will be turned to stone? Well it exists, the creepy stone animal statues which line its shores, are your first clue that you have encountered this naturally occurring lake of doom. Lake natron is named due to its high levels of natron, a natural compound which contains a whole lot of sodium carbonate, and some sodium bicarbonate as well. These compounds contain dangerously high levels of heat, with alkalinity which reaches around pH 10. The result? Anything which attempts to drink from these waters will not only lose their life, but become immersed in an early watery grave. The natron will then calcify the body, essentially tra
