When it comes to the natural world you would like to think that we have mapped and cataloged most of it. However there are still a lot of places on our fascinating planet that still need to be explored. The ocean for example remains 95% unexplored and certain jungles are so dense that getting though them is a very difficult task for mankind. Even our modern technology, like satellite imaging cant reveal the secrets of most of these wild environments. Each year scientists record an estimated 15,000 new species of plants and animals, and amazingly they figure that there are still over five million species waiting to be found. So with all of these new species being discovered and plenty of areas yet to be fully explored, could it be possible that some creatures, that science believed to be extinct, may still be alive and well. In the field of cryptozoology, researchers study rare animals that are not yet proven to exist by modern science. However these specialist dont just chase the big foot, as many would believe, they also research animals we know once roamed our planet, but we now believe to be extinct. A brilliant example of this is the Coelacanth, a prehistoric 6 foot long fish that was thought to of gone extinct 65 million years ago. However it was rediscovered off the east coast of South Africa in 1938 confirming that a creature can go unrecorded for very long periods of time. This is called the Lazarus Taxon, a group of organisms that disappears from the fossil records, only to reappear later. But could there be some really interesting creatures out there, waiting to be rediscovered, hiding amongst the trees or lurking in the deep blue sea? Creatures like the Megatherium, a huge ground sloth, that slowly moved around on its massive claws and was twenty feet long. This giant beast was believed to of been wiped out by early humans in South America, however deep in the current jungles of South America there are stories of a terrifying creature called the Mapinguari, which shares many similarities to the Megatherium. Across the planet there are many tales of animal like monsters that have been seen deep in the jungles or lurking in the oceans. Much of the source material cryptologists work off of comes from folklore and local myths. Although some of them lead to nothing, others turn out to be great discovers. The Megalodon for example, has been a very popular creature over the years, many people have claimed that they have seen the terrifying sea monster. It was a massive shark, that is believed to of grown to lengths of 18 metres (59ft) and is regarded as one of the most powerful predators in vertebrate history. Although modern science considers the monster extinct, alleged sightings of Megalodon have been documented as recent as new. When a group of South African fisherman claimed there was a huge shark in the area as big as their boat, which was around 30 to 40 feet long. It has been said that we no more about the moon than we do about our own oceans and there is still so much of the deep blue sea still to explore, the possibilities of what might be down there are almost endless. It is however very unlikely that we will ever rediscover a wolly mammoth stomping though the snow for example, but not unrealistic to believe that we could one day see a creature like this in the flesh, eating, sleeping and living. Scientists have begun to extr the DNA from the remains of a mammoth discovered in Siberia, they have taken samples of bone marrow from the extinct prehistoric creature and hope to completely decipher the DNA structure by 2017. So even if the explorers of mankind dont ever rediscover any extinct creatures, we still might be able to witness them in all there glory one day in the future. \r
