NO EXCUSES! EU tells Theresa May proposals MUST change into Brexit negotiating positions
THE European Union’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said that the UK Government must translate Theresa May’s proposals over the Brexit divorce payments into precise negotiating positions. Speaking in Brussels today, David Davis said there are “no excuses” in the way of progress over Britain’s exit from the European Union.Mr Barnier has said progress on the divorce bill, citizens’ rights and Irish border were essential to move on discussions. Mr Barnier said: “We do not need to remind ourseves that we are six months into the process."We are getting closer to the UK's withdrawal and I think that this moment should be a moment of clarity." Mr Davis said: "The UK will honour commitments we have made during the period of our membership, but it is obvious that reaching a conclusion on this issue can only be done in the context of and in accordance with a new deep and special partnership with the European Union."
Mr Barnier has said that the EU hopes for progress on all key points in Brexit negotiations following the deadlock.The EU's negotiator said that Britain and the EU would have to agree on citizens' rights, a financial settlement and the relationship between Ireland and Northern Ireland before a future EU-UK relationship can be discussed. He said: "Real progress on three main issues - citizens, Ireland, financial settlement - is essential to move to the discussion on transition and on the future relationship.
