The boys live and work at the local firehouse. They get along just fine. They like to play checkers, poke fun at the sometimes live picture of the fire chief, and most of the time, all is quiet. On one of these evenings, they are ready to call it a night and go to sleep but, all of a sudden, the fire alarm reminds them of the duties that they have been called to perform. All does not go well - from getting into their uniforms, to sliding down the pole, to a steam-driven firetruck helped by a challenged horse. They do make it to the house that's on fire. The frightened people beg for help, and Tom and Jerry water-hose it. The horse tries to draw water from a nearby trough, the hose takes on a life of its own, and even the safety net doesn't work that well. A lovely maiden drops into the arms of Jerry. Eventually, the horse helps with the drawn water - kind of. There's a great pre-Code gag in which an old man is screaming to be rescued. Instead, Tom and Jerry move over to the next window, where a blonde woman jumps out, and her skirt flies up!
