THE OCEAN — Parasites infestations at salmon farms across the world are causing prices of the fish to surge.
According to an Associated Press report on ABC, parasitic sea lice have infected salmon farms in Canada, Scotland, Norway, the United States and Chile.
Once a parasite infects the salmon, it becomes inedible. Previously, salmon were fed a pesticide to defend against the sea lice. This was effective until 2009, when the lice began to overcome it and spread internationally.
