Three suicide attacks have killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 80 in southern Iraq.

Reportedly wearing security force uniforms and driving stolen army vehicles, the attackers targeted a police checkpoint and two restaurants on a highway using car bombs and suicide vests near the city of Nassiriya.

The so-called Islamic State group have claimed responsibility in a statement on their Amaq news agency. The ultra-hardline Sunni Muslim militant group said it had killed “dozens of Shi’ites”.

It’s thought that the death toll could rise because some of the wounded were in a critical condition.
