Wigilia: the Vigil

On Christmas Eve a lonely Polish woman prepares for a traditional celebration but is disturbed by the arrival of an unexpected visitor.

Glasgow. 2 people alone on Christmas Eve: Agata and Robbie.

Agata wants to recreate a traditional Polish Wigilia* and knows one of the posh flats she cleans is empty over Christmas. She prepares 12 dishes of food and sets the dining table leaving one ‘empty’ place for the Unexpected Pilgrim.
She’s alone until the unexpected arrival of Robbie. His girlfriend has thrown him out but knowing his brother & family are away for the holidays he seeks refuge in the ‘empty’ flat.
She wants to imagine a traditional Polish “Wigilia” with her family. He’s a musician, down on his luck and needs to eat. They both need sanctuary at Christmas.

* Wigilia (vee-GEEL-yah) – The Vigil –waiting for the birth of Baby Jesus. In Poland, Christmas Eve is a night of magic when animals are said to talk and people have the power to predict the future. It’s a time for families to gather and reconcile any differences, and to remember loved ones who have gone before them. 12 small courses of food are served.
