Hundreds gathered to hear Big Ben’s final chimes on Monday.
After 157 years of hourly tolls, Big Ben will stay quiet for the next four years while renovation work is carried out, sounding only for big events, like New Year’s Eve.
“It is really sad,” one onlooker said. “That’s why we wanted to come down today, so we can hear it for the last time.”
While repairs aren’t happening to Big Ben’s bell itself, it will be disconnected to protect workers’ hearing.
The landmark is believed to be the most photographed building in the U.K.
Looking forward to hearing you in 2021, Big Ben! BONG!
