A Michigan man lost his life while fulfilling his father’s wish to have his ashes scattered in Lake Superior, reports WJBK.
Robert Louis, a 59-year-old man from Lake Orion, and his six friends took the ashes out onto the lake Sunday afternoon.
The group was near Au Train Island when a large wave struck their 19-foot boat, knocking them all into the water, notes WLUC.
While the friends were pulled onto a passing pontoon boat, Louis could not be found.
Area authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard began searching for him on Sunday and it was 24 hours before he was located.
The Coast Guard was ultimately able to determine where Louis had gone down, and a dive team was sent to recover the body, according to MLive.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with funeral expenses.
