Barcelona, Aug 17 (EFE), (Camera: Sergio Andreu).- Several people were injured when a van hit pedestrians in Barcelona's Rambla boulevard on Thursday, regional police reported.

The Mossos d'Esquadra and emergency services were deployed to the area, which is at the heart of the city's touristic center and is visited by thousands every day.

"A person in a van has been responsible for mowing over people in Barcelona's Rambla. Several injured," tweeted the Mossos, adding that people should avoid the area near Plaza de Cataluña square.

The occupant of the white van abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, sources close to the investigation told EFE.

The regional government asked that metro and train stations in the area be closed to the public.
