Footage on social media shows a dinghy carrying dozens of migrants landing in the middle of a popular tourist beach in southern Spain on Wednesday (August 9.)
Holiday makers watch as the migrants scramble to reach the shore, jump out and run across the beach.
The boat landed at Playa de los Alemanes in Zahara de los Atunes on the coast of Andalusia at around 2 p.m local time after crossing the Strait of Gibraltar.
According to a report from El Confidencial, they ran towards a series of pine trees near the Faro de Camarinal lighthouse.
The dinghy’s point of departure was not known and there was no immediate comment from police.
Due to good weather conditions, Spain has seen an increase in attempts by migrants to reach its shores over the past few weeks.
On August 1 nearly 70 sub-Saharan African migrants were injured when about 200 tried to jump the razor-wire-topped fence separating northern Morocco from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
Police said around 60 managed to enter Spanish territory whilst the Red Cross said 14 people had to be hospitalised.
The migrants used wire cutters to breach a gate, according to a spokesman from the Ceuta government.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 people are camping out in the scrub and woods around the enclave waiting for the opportunity to rush the border.
Migrants frequently jump or cut through the fences of Spain’s two enclaves in northern Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, or attempt to reach them by swimming along the Moroccan coastlines.
Over 100,000 migrants reached Europe from North Africa and the Middle East from January to June, the overwhelming majority coming by sea, according to the International Organization of Migration.
Overall numbers have fallen by almost 60 percent from the same period the previous year.
