Are Venezuelans Starving Or Eating Healthy?

In a recent airing of “La Hojilla” on the Venezuelan state-owned TV channel VTV, constituent lawyers María Alejandra Díaz and Olga Álvarez argued that there isn’t a food shortage in Venezuela and citizens aren’t actually starving. Rather, the Venezuelan people are finally eating healthier.International observers currently report extreme food shortages across Venezuela, where 93% of people cannot afford enough food and 73% have lost weight in the last year. The shortages have led to food riots and the deaths from starvation.

However, Díaz and Álvarez offered a new version of what’s happening in Venezuela, explaining that  “the weight was lost not because of the economic problem, but because of the change of habits that made us detoxify products that were harming us.”

Needless to say, international organizations disagree.
