China turns desert to a forest in 50 years

Three generations of forest rangers have, through 55 years, created the world's largest artificial forest in the northernmost part of north China’s Hebei Province.

In 1962 the Chinese government decided to build a large forest farm in order to stop the desert from encroaching towards Beijing and to preserve the water sources of the Beijing-Tianjin area.

The result after more than half a century's work is the world's largest man made forest.
