Protesters gathered outside the US Capitol in Washington chanted and cheered after news broke that the Senate had voted down legislation to remove parts of the Obama-era Affordable Care Act, a so-called “skinny repeal” of “Obamacare.”

The bill failed by 51 votes to 49. Sen. John McCain was among the Republican senators who voted no. Protesters outside had earlier called on him to reject the proposal.
