Emergency services and rescue workers in Dunedin on New Zealand’s South Island remain on high alert on July 22 after torrential rain left highways and swathes of land flooded.

A state of emergency and evacuation orders were issued for a number of regions including Waitaki, Christchurch, and Dunedin after 89 millimetres of rain fell over a 24 hour period, the NZ Herald reported. The Otago Daily Times reported the New Zealand army assisted the Civil Defence rescuing people from trapped cars overnight and while the rain has eased, there was still concern for the area around the Taieri River which is experiencing overflow.
