Summoner Gameplay (PS2)

2017-07-22 1

I picked up the game Summoner for the Playstation 2, and I decided to record some gameplay of it to make sure that the game ran just fine. As usual with my PS2 games, this was recorded through component cables plugged into my component to HDMI upscaler box, so the footage is in 720p. It, also, looks sharper thanks to the upscaling.

Summoner was a Playstation 2 launch title. Along side Eternal Ring by From Software, Summoner was one of two RPGs available for the system at launch. It was received decently but not great. It did get a sequel, also on the Playstation 2, but it seems largely forgotten about today.

Summoner is kind of a unique beast of an RPG in that this is basically a CRPG in the same vein as Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment. It was, however, developed from the ground up to be a Playstation 2 exclusive, at least at first. There was a PC version later on, though the sequel never made its way to the PC.

Upon release, the game was praised for its story, story telling and rich lore. It was, also, praised for its sheer size and the amount of things to do within its world. It was considered a stepping stone for console RPGs and a big departure from the console RPGs of the past.
