Russie, début XXe. Manifestant des dons prodigieux pour la pratique du piano, le jeune Serguei est mis en pension chez un vieux maître acariâtre. Mais plutôt que de devenir un interprète virtuose au prix d’éprouvantes heures de répétition, lui rêve à d’autres horizons : les femmes, la liberté et le privilège de donner entendre ses propres compositions. Il ignore encore la vie mouvementée que lui réserve le destin, faite d’exils, de passions et de tourments.
