A New York City police officer was "assassinated in an unprovoked attack" early Wednesday after a gunman walked up to her patrol vehicle and fired shots through the window, authorities said. Officer Miosotis Familia, a 12-year NYPD veteran, was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died several hours later. The suspect, Alexander Bonds, 34, fled the scene before he pulled out a revolver and was shot dead by police.
"This was an unprovoked direct attack on police officers who were assigned to keep the people of this city safe," Police Commissioner James O'Neill said, calling it an assassination.
